Matthew 6:25-34 (NKJV)
25 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
This passage from Matthew 6:25-34 (NKJV) is part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about reliance on God and the futility of anxiety. Here's a breakdown of the key lessons:
- Trust in God's Provision (vv. 25-26)
Jesus emphasizes that life is more than material concerns. By pointing to the birds, He illustrates God's faithful provision. If God cares for creatures like birds, how much more will He care for us, His children?
- The Uselessness of Worry (v. 27)
Worrying cannot change or extend our lives. Instead, it wastes energy and distracts from trusting God.
- God's Care in Creation (vv. 28-30)
The beauty of the lilies, which require no effort to grow, reflects God's provision for even the simplest parts of His creation. If God dresses the grass so gloriously, how much more will He care for His people?
- Faith Over Fear (vv. 31-32)
Jesus points out that worrying about basic needs is characteristic of those who don't know God. As believers, we can trust that our Heavenly Father knows and provides for our needs.
- Prioritize God's Kingdom (v. 33)
Rather than being consumed by earthly concerns, Jesus calls us to focus on seeking God's kingdom and righteousness. When we align with His will, He promises to supply what we need.
- Living in the Present (v. 34)
Jesus encourages us to take life one day at a time. Each day has enough challenges, and worrying about the future only adds unnecessary burdens.
This passage invites us to place our trust in God, live with faith, and focus on what truly matters: His kingdom and righteousness.
Philippians 4:6 (TLB)
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers.
